23rd April 2017
Paul Bampton of www.Samson&George is taking on the challenge of The London Marathon heading a team with Edwina McDowall, Clive Alderson and Andrew Webber
On 23 April 2017 we will be running LONDON MARATHON 2017 to support the incredible work of MACMILLAN CANCER SUPPORT. Individually and as a team we love a challenge and have taken on London marathon to achieve our aspirations together.
Our personal stories
“In July 2016 I was diagnosed with the very early stages of breast cancer. Whilst all set to race at the Ironman 70.3 World Champs this went on hold, health decisions became no.1 and my personal Ironman journey began to get on top of my condition. Post an operation in July and major surgery in September, I have recovered really well and can’t believe I am back training. As ever I like to move fast and the marathon is no exception! I am proud to have a championship place at London marathon and want to inspire and support others to beat this condition. I will be targeting to set a record for the fastest female charity runner for Macmillan at London 2017. I have been so very fortunate and training for London as a team is a tremendous boost” Edwina
“My mother died 12 years ago from Cancer; she was so well supported by Sue Ryder and Macmillan in her final weeks that I wanted to give something back to those charities. My ambition has always been to run a full marathon; it’s a huge challenge for me and a fantastic opportunity to raise funds for Macmillan” Andrew
The training has started!
Coach Clive is in charge of our training programme and is certainly great at getting the best out of us all. We have a 3 week training cycle which includes 2 harder weeks and 1 recovery/race week. This week is a harder week and includes 5 runs; 1 long run, 1 interval set, 1 easy pace, 1 steady pace and 1 hilly run. At least twice a week we run together – so no respite on the intervals or hills!
Up and coming races
We have plenty of races to keep up motivated and check our progress along the way! These include Park Runs, Eynsham 10k, Milton Keynes Half Marathon, Clivedon XC, Gran Canaria Half Marathon, Bramley 20 miles and Reading Half Marathon.
Meet the team
Edwina: our boundless energy runner and triathlete, representing Team GB age group at Sprint, Olympic, 70.3 half iron man distance in four world championships. What’s next – her first ever marathon.
Clive: Coach Clive or CC has done ‘everything’ from local races, GB age group triathlon to Kona Ironman World Championships. Super-fast, motivated and dedicated, he is going all out for a sub 3 hour run at London marathon.
Paul: beware he only gets warmed up when most of us are ready to cool down! Completed a Double English Channel Swim Relay Team in 2015, first ever 70.30 half ironman in 2016, a seasoned marathon runner and always keeps the banter going with the team!
Andrew: Inspired by his son running Reading Half in 2012, he truly caught the running ‘bug’ and has achieved over 100 consecutive park runs in 2014-16 and countless 10k and half marathon PBs in 2016. Ambitious to nail the marathon distance in 2017.
