Raising vital funds for the Gurkha Welfare Trust

The Gurkha Welfare Trust ensures that Gurkha veterans, their widows and their wider communities are able to live with dignity in Nepal, through the provision of financial, medical and community aid.
The walk, commencing 23rd September is tough, it’s 100km (62 miles) non-stop (apart from lots of tea, changing socks, loo breaks and maybe a eccles cake or an ice bun) in under 30 hrs.
It starts near Southampton and finishes in Brighton.
The route is across the South Downs Way. Hilly, but stunning, did I mention hilly”.
More about the Gurkha Welfare Trust
Established in 1969, The Gurkha Welfare Trust provide vital support to Gurkha veterans, their families and communities in Nepal.
They enable people to live with dignity by delivering essential financial and medical aid and work with local communities to provide access to clean water and education.
Operating through 19 Area Welfare Centres spread across traditional Gurkha recruiting areas in Nepal as well as one in India. They have around 400 staff working in the region.
They deliver a package of care to Gurkha veterans and widows to ensure they can live with dignity.
For over 50 years, the charity has provided financial aid to Gurkha veterans who are not eligible for a British Army Pension. The monthly pension provided allows Gurkha veterans and their widows to buy food and essentials to remain secure in their old age.
Their Pensioner Support Teams journey into the hills of Nepal on motorbikes, in 4×4 vehicles and on-foot to pay them a pension, check their health and deliver medication in their own homes.
Water projects bring clean water to people’s doorsteps. They install individual tap stands and toilets for all households within a village. By ensuring a safe water source and reducing open defecation, they see sharp drops in water-borne diseases such as dysentery. Having a water source close by also reduces the burden on women and children, who traditionally spend hours collecting water each day.
Providing access to an education
The schools programme builds and repairs schools in remote regions of Nepal to improve access to education and in turn offer a better future to Nepali children.
One of their longest running programmes, for schools benefiting hundreds of remote villages. Last year they built 13 in total. They also delivered what we call ‘minor’ refurbishments to 105 schools. This can be something as simple as the delivery of new desks or books, right up to the building of new toilet blocks. In total, their work on schools last year benefited over 40,000 children. William and team hope they can make it, what a very worthwhile cause.
