Vital Research in Crohn’s Disease in Honour of Michael Seres
Justine Seres of Estate Agents Learning Limited will be putting on her trainers on 11th May in memory of her late husband Michael.
Justine tells” My late husband passed away 5 years ago. My three children and I wanted to mark the anniversary by holding a sponsored walk on 11 May from University College London Hospital – where he spent so much time recovering from major surgeries, to his beloved Queens Park Rangers Football Club. Two important places in his life, both for very different reasons.
Michael passed away at 51 years old in 2020. He had been diagnosed at the age of 12 with Crohn’s Disease. At the time, his doctors did not believe his symptoms and thought he was just trying to avoid going to school. During his lifetime, he underwent numerous bowel resections, leaving him with only 40cm of small intestine and unable to eat. His only option to give him quality of life was to have a rare bowel transplant, which took place in 2011. This gave Michael a further 9 years but unfortunately transplant comes with its own issues.
Unbelievably, these health issues did not stop him
Michael went through two bouts of chemotherapy for lymphoma, brought on by the anti-rejection meds. In 2019 he went through stem cell treatment in the hope this would stop any further lymphomas. Unfortunately, the process was tough on his body and caused his new bowel to reject, leaving him on intravenous feed.
Unbelievably, these health issues did not stop him living a full and active life and even in the last few months, whilst being hooked up to his ‘feed’ for 16 hours a day, he continued to work and travel, until eventually his body could take no more and he was rushed into hospital at the end of April 2020″.
