I was lucky enough to get a ballot place in the London Marathon 2020 – this will be the second time that I have run the marathon. Having lost my mum four years ago to stomach, liver and gall bladder cancer, I am running for the local hospice in Exeter who provided exemplary care her in her final days. I see this as a very small price for how much I feel indebted to them.
I’m also a keen surfer and spend most weekends in the summer and quite a few in the winter(!) volunteering with the Wave Project, a fantastic charity that provide ‘surf therapy’ to young people who need help proving they ‘can do it’. This could be because of physical or mental health issues. This has been a very rewarding project to be involved with, but needs constant fundraising. The project in North Devon that I am involved with costs about £56k per year to run – this year we raised £16k – not enough to be sustainable, and highlighting just why we need to raise as much as possible.
