Harrisons Homes 80th Anniversary of the D-Day Landings 3 Jun 2024
Harrisons Homes have been decorating their window to spread some cheer to passersby in Sittingbourne for some time now. The bright and cheery designs have become quite the talk of the town, with residents and visitors alike stopping by to say how much they like them, or to ask what the next design will be.
Up until now, the designs have been purely seasonal with themes such as Halloween, Christmas, Valentine’s and Easter. However, their latest window marks a something a little different.

With 6th June this year marking 80 years since the D-Day landings, Harrisons wanted to commemorate the date in an uplifting, yet respectful way. So they collaborated with Cadell from Studio Lockington to come up with a “Fun and Fancy 40’s themed window”
Cadell explains, “When designing Harrison’s D-Day 80th anniversary window, I really wanted to capture the aesthetic of the 1940’s in a celebratory way. I loved creating the fun 1940’s pin up girls in the colours of the Union Jack, with skinny waists and huge hair curls. In primary colours with black outlines, the figures really stand out to the passers-by”
“In contrast, handwritten on the number ‘80’ are the names of the beaches from the D-Day landings and faint shadows of planes and boats in the background, a poignant reminder of what took place on that day”
Harrisons owner Chris Ellis added, “The feedback we get from our window designs is fantastic, but the reaction to this one has been incredible and entirely positive. I think the combination of the vintage theme, bold characters and colours catches the eye. Then you are drawn in to the moving tribute of all five beaches, Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword where the landings during D-Day took place, being handwritten into the ‘80’, a stark reminder of what took place in 1944”
